the louisiana purchase
In the early 1800's the United States began to expand westward known as the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The Pikes Expedition which took place between July 1806 through July 1807 authorized the government to explore the south and west of the recent Louisiana Purchase. The American settlers were curious about going west. As the settlers moved west the United States government felt it needed to have more control of the land where the new settlers moved. The Louisiana Purchase was bought from the French in 1803, from Napoleon. The territory was 828,000 square miles. The territory is what now is Arkansas, Missouri, Iowa, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, a portion of Minnesota, a large part of North Dakota, a big part of South Dakota, New Mexico, a part of Texas, Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Louisiana, parts of Alberta, and Saskatchewan. The United States bought the land of a total of 68 million francs which equals 15 million USD (United States Dollars). The Louisiana Purchase took place during President Thomas Jefferson's term. The Federalist Party didn't agree with President Jefferson because they felt that buying any land went against the constitution. President Jefferson agreed that the constitution did not state that land could be bought. On the other hand, Jefferson stated that he had the constitutional power to negotiate treaties and that was enough. As a result, the Louisiana Purchase doubled the size of the United States.
