the whiskey rebellion
The Whiskey Rebellion was a tax protest between the United States federal government and its citizens. This "whiskey tax" was the first tax that the newly formed federal government created that became law in 1791. The tax was created to help reduce the national debt. This new tax was apart of the United States Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton's program the pay for the cost that took place during the American Revolutionary War. The farmers in the western frontiers were used to using their extra grain and corn to distill and make whiskey. They often used the whiskey they made as a form of trading. The resisters felt that they were fighting for the principles of the American Revolution. They felt that this was taxation without representation. However the federal government felt that they were legal. The protesters used violence and intimidation to stop the tax collectors from getting the tax. The federal government in response to this uprising sent President Washington himself and 13,000 soldiers to stop the uprising. The rebels went home before the army arrived. The Whiskey Rebellion proved that the new national government could stop violent resistance to federal laws. These events helped lead to the creation of the Republican and Federalist Parties.

President George Washington Says Farewell to the American people. Washington originally wrote his first Farewell Letter to the people of the United States because he planned to retire after his first term in office. President George Washington felt that without his leadership the country would be torn apart. Four years later at the close of his second term he went back to the first letter he had written, but this time he had revised it and made it better than it already was. In his Farewell Letter he stated that he was not going to run for a third term. He also reflected on all of his accomplishments while in office. He also gave advice to the American people.
